evil and spoiler spoiler spoiler It s what saved the book from a lower rating Hallelujah to our Lord Shrimp and stuff Fact 7 will I bother reading book 2 in this series Maybe Not sure We shall see Or not And the moral of this Gripping Non Review GNR is Omega isn t very bad But Omega isn t very good, either It has a juvenile feel that is definitely not up to Reine s usual standard Want to read Pure, Undiluted Reine Awesomeness UPRA Read Descent The first three instalment in the series are available as a free bundle onYou have no excuse and stuff You are quite welcome And stuff Very good read This is my first time reading Reine, and she has mad storytelling skills My only complaint about the wordbuilding is that even though this is the first book of the series, I kept reading things that I didn t understand, but felt I was supposed to Either things will be explainedas the series progresses, or this series is not as autonomous from her other series as I had been led to believe does a good job of that Suffice to say, I really enjoyed the PNR UF world created by Reine It s different from anything I ve read NOTE I ve since been informed by Mara that the authors series characters and plotlines are all overlapping, about 4 series worth of books Far too many books to go back and read so I guess I ll just forge ahead from this point and hope it all starts to click The author is doing herself a disservice and losing some readers tying all these series so tightly together, IMO I ve since read many complaints in reviews about confusion and needing to read past series causing someone to give up reading the books And there are so dang many of the books I was provided this e arc by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review This was the first book I ever read by S.M Reine, but it certainly won t be the last Omega started out strong from the very beginning The sense of urgency and thriller like quality of the first chapter caught my interest and it didn t let go until the end Even as I was thrown into a new world with little explanations, I never felt lost or confused The author managed to set the story without resorting to info dumpingI was provided this e confused The author managed to set the story without resorting to info dumping that might have slowed the pace and become dull Bravo The three things I most admired about this book The author didn t pull any punches or sugar coat things There were lots of action, violence and gristle, yet they didn t seem like overkill They were cohesive to the plot instead of being there just for shock value The unique heroine Deidre wasn t your typical special snowflake She didn t have the coolest powers and wasn t the best at everything In fact, she was an Omega, the weakest shapeshifter in a Pack You d think that would mean she was helpless and always in need of saving you d be wrong Deidre might have been far from ranking as the strongest, fastest or most capable shifter, but she knew how to take care of herself It takes a special kind of strength to bounce back after being bullied and pushed around constantly Deidre would fall countless times and get up again and again and again She countered insults with sass and kept her head held high And what she lacked in brute power she made up for with her good instincts and street smarts Except for the tiny detail of her view spoiler letting Stark inject her with drugs I m still unsure about how that contributed anything to the story hide spoiler One of my favorite things about this book is how the protagonist openly called out her asshole Alpha on his abusive behavior and victim blaming THISS This is vital and I want to seeof this in books and real life I also appreciated how Deidre questioned the prejudices and unfairness of the systemIt was indisputably crap that someone like Gage could satisfy his animal instincts, whereas Jolene could notI was unsure about the romantic plot line when it first appeared, but eventually I decided I really liked what the author did with it Deidre and view spoiler Gage hide spoiler s relationship got little page time it was secondary to the plot of the book but I loved how realistically it was portrayed It wasn t romanticized It wasn t portrayed as a force that could battle and win over every bad thing in the world It was even acknowledged that two people caring for each other wasn t enough to cancel out all their sorrows and make them 100% happyThey were too broken to make the pieces of themselves complete each other But for the night, they could make themselves feel just a little less hollowFor a relationship to be healthy people have to learn to love themselves before they can love each other.BIG SPOILER AHEAD DO NOT OPEN SPOILER TAG IF YOU HAVEN T READ THIS BOOK YET view spoiler Gage s death SO MANY FEELS The fact that Deidre had to kill him slayed me Still, I think that the way it was done was fitting They were never going to work long term and Gage s self hate was so ingrained that I don t think he could have gotten over it hide spoiler Some extra goodies A boss who literally causes you to envision your worst nightmares LOL I found this so funny and amusing and I loved how the author described the scenes where reality and nightmare fused together Niamh and Deidre s friendship was a great representation of the ambiguity of certain relationships Sometimes people have different views on important subjects not just whether to order pizza or Chinese takeout, but different political ideas or views on how social issues should be handled , yet that doesn t mean they can t care for each other and be friends Niamh was also a nice source of comic reliefYou look like whatever a werewolf craps out after eating a deer, Niamh announced when Deidre collapsed at the lunch tableA little bit of hopefully constructive criticism There were some things towards the end that didn t make sense to me and left me with mixed feelings concerns about the future of the series They are all very spoilery things, so if you haven t read this book yet OPEN THE SPOILER TAG AT YOUR OWN RISK view spoiler 1 Rylie turning out to be alive seemed quite unrealistic to me The whole plot of the story revolved around Everton s master plan to kill her and the moment she went down during a fight with Gage NOBODY THOUGHT TO CHECK IF SHE WAS REALLY, TRULY DEAD Given how many injuries shapeshifters can heal it didn t seem right that everyone would assume that just because she d fallen and didn t get back up she was down for good.2 Everton proclaiming Deidre would be his new Beta Whaaaaat How does he expect to pull that off It s one thing for him to recognize D s potential for some mysterious reason , but to put her in change of give her authority over all the Pack members but himself made no sense at all Shapeshifters work on a strict might is right , the strongest are at the top of the food chain motto As an Omega, Deidre was looked down on and bullied by most of the Pack through the book and I just don t see how she s going to enforce her new authority or how the Pack is going to respect her when they think her weak.3 I also can t help but wonder what did Deidre and Gage going undercover actually accomplish They had a half assed plan and didn t gather any important intel other than the time Stark was going to attack Rylie which didn t end up being of any use to them since Deidre was powerless to stop Stark and Gage actually helped him while being under his compulsion hide spoiler Final verdict Omega needs a bit of polishing and editing to smooth out some plot points, but overall I really enjoyed it I especially loved the unconventional heroine and can t wait to see what trials await her in the next installment of the series This is out today Can one of you guys read this book please so I have someone to talk to about it D I really enjoyed this one It grabbed my attention right from Chapter 1 and I flew through the pages all the way till the end So this is the first book in a new UF series called War of the Alphas, the war being between Rylie Gresham the good Alpha and Everton Stark the bad Alpha Our MC is Deirdre, who goes undercover at the behest of Rylie and joins Stark s rebellion to gather infor This is out today Can one of you guys read this book please so I have someone to talk to about it D I really enjoyed this one It Gresham the good Alpha and Everton Stark the bad Alpha Our MC is Deirdre, who goes undercover at the behest of Rylie and joins Stark s rebellion to gather information and report back to her.Reine knows how to keep things interestingI ll be honest here the main thing that kept me turning the pages like a madwoman was to get to the parts with Deirdre and Stark together There was a sort of tension between these two view spoiler I m not talking romantic tension hide spoiler that totally and completely held my attention and did not let go view spoiler Although, when I got to the end of the book, I sorta felt like I had been waiting for something that never happened Again, I m not talking about romance Not sure how to explain it I guess I just thought we d see something MORE out of Stark as a character, something that Deirdre would be able to pull out of him as a result of this weird relationship they are starting to forge with each other Maybe in the next book hide spoiler Characters Deirdre is a likable MC she s not exactly a total kickass heroine which makes sense at this point, seeing as she s a shapeshifter who isn t able to shift into a powerful animal like all the others can , but she s not a whiny crybaby either I like her Stark gave me mild Mad Rogan vibes minus the charm He s definitely DEFINITELY not a good guy, but there sto it than just that I won t say that he s not exactly a bad guy, cuz he totally IS a bad guy, but there s a tiny bit of ambiguity going on too You ll see what I mean Riley seems like an idiot to me I guess maybe if I read her other series, I d feel differently about her But just from what I saw of her hereshe seems dumb. Some negatives. The world building kinda sucked I get the feeling that Reine is assuming that we ve read her other series the one with Riley I guess , so we already know what s what I didn t read that other series, so I don t know what Or maybe I m wrong about that and there just is no background anywhere for the stuff in this book I dunno It was a tiny bit frustrating, but I was able to shrug it off for the most part and just roll with what scant information I was given Hopefullybackground will be given in the next book. The other thing I wasn t that impressed with was some of the plot details For instance, there didn t seem to be much thought given to Deirdre s undercover mission It was just send the girl there undercover That s it view spoiler Riley s the head of millions of shapeshifters She s the equivalent of the President of a huge country So are you seriously telling me that the best plan this world leader could come up with was to hastily send a virtual stranger to the enemy camp with the oh so detailed directive of I just want you to hang out with them and pass information back to me And the means of passing on the info Uh, I dunno, just try to find a phone somewhere I guess and sneak away for a minute to phone home wow That sure was well thought out Great plan hide spoiler I wish there had been a littlecomplexity to some aspects of the plot Some things came off as a bit half assed. But overall, I did really like this I thought some things were kinda predictable, but that didn t take anything away from my reading enjoyment at all I m REALLY looking forward to the next book as soon as it comes out, you can bet I ll be all over that thing view spoiler I m curious what animal Deirdre is Did she change during her 2nd lethe trip I think she must have, and Stark saw it And no one knows what animal that is that Stark changes into, right I bet Deirdre s animal is similar somehow to Stark s, and that s why he named her his beta And maybe that s also why she s immune to his compulsion Just a guess But still, none of that would explain why she hasn t been able to shift all this time hide spoiler Lots and lots of possibilities here, I feel like anything can happen Fun This is the first in a new series by this author but her fans may well recognise certain aspects of the world that is created here Ms Reine has an amazing gift of writing urban fantasy that is truly appealing It s very easy to be swept away by her world building although if you haven t read some of her other books you might find initially that this book seems to start without a true beginning I did feel that certain explanations needed to be fleshed out if honest but the story that followed This is the first in a new series by this author but her fans may well recognise certain aspects of the world that is created here Ms Reine has an amazing gift of writing urban fantasy that is truly appealing It s very easy to be swept away by her world building although if you haven t read some of her other books you might find initially that this book seems to start without a true beginning I did feel that certain explanations needed to be fleshed out if honest but the story that followed was fast, interesting and totally unique.Deirdre is one of the reborn humans who are now something Other In Deirdres case she s a shifter but for some strange reason she is unable to achieve her animal form and is unsure exactly just what it is She has long been vilified by other Shifters and tries to keep her head down whilst surviving in the new inhospitable world but her life takes a huge turn when it s discovered that she is immune to compulsion Forced to make a stand Deirdre finds herself falling deeper into a situation beyond her control and before she can catch her breath finds herself branded a terrorist Now I will admit that this author has built this out of the ashes of a previous series that she has written Although I ve read some of her works I personally haven t read the Seasons of the Moon series which seems to be the precursor to War of the Alphas but I found the heroine to be engaging and it has a quickly developing plot that caught and held my attention I found Deirdre to be quite a tough cookie with a surprising amount of mental strength Yes she has faced many challenges but she is still fighting and is most definitely not down for the count Considered a lowly Omega by many her true ability lies in what she is not rather than what she is If not just a blind follower than just what is Deirdre capable of There are some answers given here but there is still an awful lot left to uncover as this series continues Not strictly a romance although there are moments when the reader might think perhaps that is on the cards but this author enjoys surprising her readers and this book is no exception.i was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review I really enjoyed this book It had plenty of action and a heroine who made no apologies for being who she was Nicely done. I ve recently found some reviews I wrote a few months ago and I don t know why I never posted them Hum, it s time to change that Actual rating 3.5 starsIt was a good start for this series and the plot was fine The main character, Deirdre, wasn t annoying, which is sometimes something hard to find in books, and she knows how to protect herself She s strong and doesn t trust anyone easily And I have to mention that I liked what happens at the end because I wasn t expecting it at all.Sadly I ve recently found some reviews I wrote a few months ago and I don t know why I never posted them Hum, it s time to change that Actual rating 3.5 starsIt was a good start for this series and the plot was fine The main character, Deirdre, wasn t annoying, which is sometimes something hard to find in books, and she knows how to protect herself She s strong and doesn t trust anyone easily And I have to mention that I liked what happens at the end because I wasn t expecting it at all.Sadly, I feel it s not a memorable book I know that when the next installment is released, I ll remember just a few details about this one This book has been released yesterday And now I have it and it s waiting for me to read it But I can t because I m currently reading two books and I have a lot to study.Honestly, real life sucks Ten years ago, Deirdre Tombs died When she was reborn the next day, Deirdre had become a shapeshifter who can t shift shapes Nobody knows what animal she s supposed to be She s definitely not a werewolf The Alpha, Rylie Gresham, can t force her to transform like other members of her pack Now Deirdre is considered an omega, the weakest shapeshifter in the pack a vulnerable position when Everton Stark demands tribute from Rylie He wants to be the dominant Alpha The only Alpha And he plans to make her pack submit whether they want to or not Stark can make every shapeshifter obey him by force of will alone Every shapeshifter except Deirdre The shifter who can t shift is the only hope for Rylie to win the war against Stark It will take everything Deirdre has to survive undercover in his den But can an omega s will be stronger than that of a charismatic, deadly Alpha like Everton Stark I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars on this On the plus side, it is fast moving and action packed with an appealing reluctant heroine at the center In this version of the post apocalypse, billions die, but most return Many as supernatural creatures A shifter who cannot shift, Deidre Tombs is shunted from foster home to foster home, learning to use weapons in violent confrontations where other supes can rely on supernatural abilities An outside, she is caught between two superna I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars on this On the plus side, it is fast moving and action packed with an appealing reluctant heroine at the center In this version of the post apocalypse, billions die, but most return Many as supernatural creatures A shifter who cannot shift, Deidre Tombs is shunted from foster home to foster home, learning to use weapons in violent confrontations where other supes can rely on supernatural abilities An outside, she is caught between two supernatural factions warring for control of the supernatural world The content is extremely violent supernatural healing abilities leading to confrontations that would kill a mundane I was fascinated by the world created in the first volume and eager to discover Deidre s true shifter nature and moved on to book 2 in a hurry Ugh, I wrote a whole review for this, but goodreads found that exact moment to crash and I lost all of it fumes I m not in the mood any and I m way too angry to write another, so review to come.
